Tobacco Treatment
Cigarettes, smokeless tobacco and e-cigarettes are powerfully addictive and damaging to your health. Quitting is one of the best things you can do, and Mayo Clinic Health System is here to help.
We understand how challenging it is to quit smoking and using other nicotine-based products, especially when you do it on your own. That is why we offer tobacco treatment services though several of our specialty areas. By addressing tobacco addiction in different ways, we support a variety of needs among our patients.

Treatments
We offer tobacco treatment services in the following settings:
Primary care
An important part of primary care is preventing chronic diseases, such as those caused by tobacco use. If you want to stop using tobacco, our providers can help you develop a quit plan, which may include:
- Nicotine replacement medications to reduce withdrawal and cravings. These medications come in different forms, including patches, gum and inhalers, and may be available over the counter or by prescription.
- Prescription medications, such as bupropion and varenicline, that can reduce your urge to smoke and decrease cravings and withdrawal symptoms. Insurance coverage for prescription medications may vary.
- Referrals for additional support, such as tobacco cessation programs or addiction therapy.
Addiction therapy
If you’ve tried to quit before without success, addiction therapy may provide the in-depth treatment you need. Addiction therapy helps you understand the root of addiction. You learn communication skills, how to cope with stress and how to identify your triggers.
We provide addiction therapy in individual and group settings at select locations in Minnesota.
Pulmonology
Our pulmonologists offer lung cancer screening for people who have a history of smoking and meet specific criteria. Lung cancer screening detects lung cancer early, before you have symptoms. If you are a current patient, Mayo Clinic Health System will notify you if you are eligible for this important test.
Tobacco treatment specialists
Our providers are committed to helping you improve your long-term health and quality of life through tobacco cessation.
Our specialists include:
Referrals
A referral may be required for tobacco treatment. Call your preferred tobacco treatment location to learn more.
If you are a provider, you can refer a patient online, by phone or by fax.
FAQ
How can I resist tobacco and nicotine cravings?
Using the right nicotine replacement therapy will help, but you may still feel cravings. Pay attention to what triggers your cravings and develop a plan to distract yourself until they subside. That plan might include taking a brisk walk, eating a healthy snack or calling a friend.
What if I am not ready to quit?
That is OK. Quitting is a process that takes time, patience and practice. You may require other factors in your life to align before you are ready to make a change that lasts. When you are ready to become tobacco-free, you will know. And we will be here.
Are other tobacco cessation resources available?
The American Lung Association offers education, tips and resources for people who want to quit tobacco. You can also call their free Lung HelpLine for one-on-one support.
Is there a cost for tobacco treatment?
Insurance coverage for tobacco treatment services may vary. Check with your insurance plan to find out what it covers.
What are my payment options, and do you offer financial assistance?
Our Patient Account Services representatives can assist you with any issues related to billing and insurance. We also offer financial assistance if you are unable to pay for care due to financial hardship.
