New Prague's Cancer Center expansion
NEW PRAGUE, Minn. ― Mayo Clinic Health System in New Prague broke ground October 2 on a $9 million Cancer Center and Infusion Therapy expansion. The project is expected to be completed in fall 2025.
"This expansion of the Cancer Center is a reflection of our commitment to providing cutting-edge care, individualized support and a healing environment for every patient who walks through our doors," says James Hebl, M.D., regional vice president of Mayo Clinic Health System in Southwest Minnesota.
The number of patients in the United States needing cancer care is expected to grow by nearly 9% in the next five years. The New Prague Cancer Center provides lifesaving treatment to patients with cancer in communities within many miles of the city.
"What excites our team the most is the opportunity it brings to improve lives and how it will change the way we provide cancer care here in New Prague," said Amrit Singh, M.B.B.S., chair of Oncology and Hematology for Mayo Clinic Health System in Minnesota. "Our plans include creating additional patient capacity, modernizing the facility and improving efficiency by bringing the cancer and infusion therapy practices together into a combined location."
Some of the project's key features will include:
- An integrated and full-service Oncology Department, providing clinical care, chemotherapy, targeted therapies and immunotherapies, genetic counseling, nutrition guidance, social work assistance and pharmacy support.
- Enhanced patient privacy and accommodations that support infection control.
- Eight infusion therapy bays and two private rooms, which will be used for both cancer and noncancer infusions.
- Five exam rooms for Oncology and Hematology patients.
- Improved patient flow and wayfinding.
- Dedicated clinician office, nurse station and break room.
- Geothermal heating and cooling to reduce energy use and costs.
- Garden area outside the large windows in patient rooms.
The project is the second phase of the strategic vision for the New Prague campus, reaffirming our commitment to providing high-quality healthcare in rural communities. The first phase, completed in January 2022, was a $5 million operating room expansion and the introduction of numerous surgical specialties, ensuring that residents in rural areas have access to advanced care close to home.
