Accreditation & Awards in Eau Claire
Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire demonstrates a commitment to achieving high-quality, safe care for the patients we serve.
Our commitment is evidenced in the accreditations and awards we've received from these organizations:
American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehab (AACVPR)
Locations in Barron, Bloomer, Eau Claire, Menomonie and Osseo are accredited by the AACVPR in 2023. To earn accreditation, our program participated in an application process that required extensive documentation of our practices. As the only peer-review accreditation process, AACVPR Program Certification is designed to review individual programs for adherence to the highest standards and guidelines developed and published by a group of professional societies in the field. Certification is valid for three years.
AACVPR-certified programs are leaders in cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation because they offer the most advanced practices available and have proven track records of high quality patient care.
American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine
In 2022, Mayo Clinic Health System in Northwest Wisconsin received Electrodiagnostic Laboratory Accreditation with Exemplary Status by demonstrating clinical excellence in electrodiagnostic medicine to patients, referral sources and payers, and confirms the laboratory's commitment to providing the highest-quality healthcare.
American College of Emergency Physicians
In 2022, all five Emergency Departments in Northwest Wisconsin achieved accreditation, which is given to programs that meet the high standards established by the organization's Clinical Ultrasound Accreditation Program. Only 45 emergency departments in the nation have achieved this accreditation, and Northwest Wisconsin locations are the only emergency departments in Minnesota or Wisconsin with this accreditation.
American College of Radiology
The HERS Breast Center in Eau Claire was re-accredited in 2021 by the Commission on Quality and Safety and the Commission on Breast Imaging as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence. This means HERS has undergone a rigorous review process and meets nationally accepted standards of care. Accreditation by the ACR demonstrates a commitment to quality care and patient safety. Each three-year accreditation includes mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy and breast ultrasound.

- Commission on Cancer
Cancer program accreditation in Eau Claire shows that we meet or exceed the commission's standards, providing patients with complete cancer care with advanced equipment and services; treatment options coordinated by medical staff from multiple specialties; access to clinical trials; cancer education and support services; and quality care close to home with Mayo Clinic expertise. View our annual report. - Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program
The bariatric surgery program in Eau Claire received re-accreditation in 2021 as a low-acuity center following a rigorous review process by MBSAQIP during which it proved that it can maintain certain physical resources, human resources, and standards of practice. - National Surgical Quality Improvement Program
This program praises a select group of hospitals for achieving a commendable composite score in either an "All Cases" category or a category which includes only "High Risk" cases, based on outstanding quality scores in eight areas of surgical care. Eau Claire was recognized on the "All Cases" list. - Trauma Center Verification
Verification by the toughest trauma credentialing agency in the world demonstrates the highest level of trauma care available in the region. Eau Claire completed the three-year verification process in 2021. This is a voluntary and extensive process that demonstrates commitment to injured patients, injury prevention and public and staff education. As a Level II trauma center, Eau Claire has 24-hour, seven-day-a-week coverage by trauma surgeons, orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgeons, and specialists in emergency medicine, anesthesiology, ear, nose and throat, radiology, thoracic surgery and critical care. In addition, the trauma team consists of a large group of healthcare providers, including nurses specially trained in trauma, therapists, chaplains and other specialists.
American Heart Association/American Stroke Association
In 2023, Eau Claire received the Get With the Guidelines – Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award and the Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll awards. These are the highest awards these organizations offer. To receive the award, hospitals must achieve 85% or higher adherence to all Get With the Guidelines – Stroke achievement indicators for at least two years. During the same period, hospitals also must achieve 75% or higher compliance with five of eight Get With the Guidelines – Stroke quality measures.
American Nurses Credentialing Center — Magnet recognition
In 2023, Mayo Clinic Health System in Northwest Wisconsin achieved Magnet recognition, the highest national honor for nursing excellence. Research demonstrates that Magnet recognition provides specific benefits to healthcare organizations and their communities, such as:
- Higher patient satisfaction with nurse communication, availability of help and receipt of discharge information
- Lower risk of patient falls and lower hospital infections
- Higher job satisfaction among nurses
- Lower nurse reports of intentions to leave their position
Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Distinction
In 2023, Eau Claire was recognized with a Blue Distinction® Centers for Cardiac Care designation. To receive this, hospitals must demonstrate expertise in delivering safe, effective cardiac care, focusing on cardiac valve surgery, coronary artery bypass graft and percutaneous coronary interventions. A hospital must also have earned national accreditation at the facility level.
Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)
- Overall Hospital Quality star rating
Eau Claire earned a five-star rating in 2023. CMS measures the broad categories of mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience, and timely and effective care. - Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) star rating
Eau Claire is recognized as a four-star hospital based on data from patient experience surveys in 2024. Hospitals receive ratings of one to five stars, with five-stars being the highest score. HCAHPS star ratings help consumers choose highly rated hospitals in their area.
College of American Pathologists
The Pathology laboratory in Eau Claire is the first in Wisconsin to have earned International Organization for Standardization, ISO 15189 — an advanced-level accreditation. Laboratories must have established policies and protocols that check for errors or substandard performances, while also training staff in process improvement techniques to continuously improve performance and accuracy.
Doximity Residency Navigator
The Eau Claire Mayo Clinic Family Medicine Residency Program has been ranked No. 2 in Wisconsin and No. 12 in the nation for 2023, determined by three factors:
- Current resident and recent alumni satisfaction
- Reputation among board-certified family physicians
- Objective data, including research output
Healthgrades
Eau Claire was included in the 100 Best Hospitals list by Healthgrades, an independent health ratings company for 2024. Healthgrades analyzes patient outcome data on more than 45 million records of Medicare medical claims. Other select data include patient survey data from Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and patient outcome data for all patients from states that make their data available.
Infectious Diseases Society of America
In 2021, Mayo Clinic Health System in Northwest Wisconsin was designated by the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) as with Antimicrobial Stewardship Center of Excellence.
Leapfrog Group
Eau Claire earned the Leapfrog Hospital Safety top safety grade of an "A" in 2024. Hospital safety grades are assigned biannually to 2,600 acute-care hospitals across the nation, and provides patients a single measure that represents our overall performance in keeping them safe from preventable errors, injuries, accidents and infections.
National Association of Epilepsy
Since 2019, Eau Claire has maintained Level 3 Epilepsy Center accreditation by demonstrating the professional expertise and facilities to provide the highest level medical evaluation and treatment for patients with complex epilepsy.

- Best Cancer Hospitals
Eau Claire was included in the 2023 list of "America's Best Cancer Hospitals" for 2023. Eau Claire was ranked #40 in America and #2 in Wisconsin. The rankings of 175 hospitals overall used three data sources: a nationwide online survey, results from patient surveys and hospital quality metrics. - Best Hospitals in the U.S.
Eau Claire was recognized on the March 2023 list of the "Best Hospitals in the U.S." Eau Claire was ranked among the top 2% at No. 70. In addition, the hospital received an above-average rating for infection prevention measures. - World's Best Smart Hospitals
Eau Claire was included in the annual list for 2024, and ranked No. 108 in the world and No. 1 in Wisconsin. The World's Best Smart Hospitals 2024 ranks the 300 facilities in 28 countries that lead in their use of AI, digital imaging, telemedicine, robotics and electronic functionalities. - World’s Best Specialized Hospitals
Eau Claire was included in the annual list for 2024 and ranked No. 31 in the world and No. 1 in Wisconsin for Cardiac Surgery. The ranking of World's Best Specialized Hospitals 2024 features the top 300 hospitals for cardiology and oncology, the top 250 for pediatrics, the top 150 in each specialty of cardiac surgery, endocrinology, and gastroenterology, the top 125 in each for neurology, neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology, and urology and the top 100 for obstetrics and gynecology.

Eau Claire was recertified as a Primary Stroke Program following an August 2023 on-site survey by a certification team. Offered in collaboration with the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, achieving certification means we're making exceptional efforts to foster better outcomes. The quality of care we provide meets the unique and specialized needs of stroke patients.
University of Wisconsin Organ and Tissue Donation
The Excellence in Tissue Donation Award recognized Eau Claire in 2022 and is given to partner hospitals who achieved at least a 60% consent rate. This metric measures the collaborative work between the hospital staff and tissue bank in coordinating communication around tissue consent conversations.
U.S. News and World Report
U.S. News & World Report recognized Eau Claire as a "Best Regional Hospital" in Northwestern Wisconsin and High Performing nationally in Acute Myocardial Infarction, Congestive Heart Failure, Diabetes, Pneumonia, Renal Failure, Total Hip Arthroplasty and Total Knee Arthroplasty.
