Overnight oximetry study - the patient is sent home and instructed to wear a small clip on the finger known as an oximeter while sleeping. The oximeter records the oxygen levels in the blood and pulse rate during hours of sleep. This test may be used to detect sleep apnea.
Pulmonary function testing (PFTs) - includes measurements of the lungs breathing capacity or spirometry, spirometry after a medication is given to improve breathing known as a bronchodilator, and other important tests to assist the lung and heart doctor in determining a cause for shortness of breath.
