BARRON, Wis. –– In 2014, Nancy Nix, a 70-year-old retired grandmother of 10 grandchildren, decided to become a volunteer at Mayo Clinic Health System – Northland in Barron when her husband of 32 years needed surgery. Nix says she was impressed with the outstanding care the staff in Barron provided to her husband. Once her husband recovered, Nix says she decided to give back by volunteering.
Nix volunteers in multiple areas, including the gift shop, surgery procedure area and Volunteer Services. In the gift shop, Nix helps customers, rings up sales, stocks shelves and more. In the surgery procedure area, Nix greets patients in the lobby, takes them to their procedure room and makes them feel comfortable. Once a patient is discharged, Nix accompanies them to the lobby, disinfects the room, changes linens and prepares the room for the next patient. In Volunteer Services, Nix enters data into the computer and helps with any other projects that need to be completed.
Nix says she looks forward to the days she volunteers. She says she enjoys meeting new people, putting them at ease and assisting them in any way she can.
“It takes little effort to brighten the day of an employee, patient or visitor; and volunteering makes me feel good about myself,” Nix says. “Employees will often go out of their way to let volunteers know how much they appreciate the help. I have even had patients thank me for volunteering, which makes the experience worthwhile.”
Nix says being a volunteer at Mayo Clinic Health System has been a wonderful learning experience.
“It has encouraged me to grow as an individual and get out of my comfort zone, as well as learn new skills and give back to the community,” Nix says.
