EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire received three awards from the University of Wisconsin Organ and Tissue Donation for its organ donation efforts, including the Family Care Award, Excellence in Tissue Donation Award and Award of Hope silver-level recognition.
“Each award is something to be proud of,” explains Kelly Buchholtz, director of Neurosciences and nurse champion for the organ donation program at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire. “However, the Family Care Award is a special recognition of the care and support we provide families during these difficult times. Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire was the only hospital in UW Organ and Tissue Donation service area to receive this award.”
In late 2017, the Eau Claire organ donation team demonstrated consistent family support practices during a complex, rapid recovery case. The donor was able to save three lives thanks to the high degree of collaboration and coordination displayed by the team.
“Organ donation is such an important cause,” says surgeon Jason Beckermann, M.D., physician champion for the organ donation program at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire. “These awards represent our team’s hard work and dedication in supporting organ donor families and ensuring quality clinical results.”
The Excellence in Tissue Donation Award is given to partner hospitals who achieved at least a 60 percent consent rate. This metric measures the collaborative work between the hospital staff and tissue bank in coordinating communication around tissue consent conversations.
The Award of Hope recognizes the comprehensive work of hospitals that achieve or exceed the goals of consent conversations with potential donors and donor families, and the clinical expertise in providing the best possible outcome for each organ. The silver-level recognition is given to hospitals that met or exceed 75 percent of medically eligible donors who become actual donors.
According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, more than 116,000 people in the U.S. are waiting for an organ transplant, and 20 people die each day waiting for a transplant. To enroll in Wisconsin’s Donor Registry, visit donatelifewisconsin.org.
