EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — Mayo Clinic Health System neurologist Donn Dexter, M.D., (pictured at center holding a basket) received the inaugural Donn Dexter Physician Excellence Award from University of Wisconsin Organ and Tissue Donation for his comprehensive leadership and clinical work to support organ donation. Dr. Dexter was notified of the award at a recent Organ Donation Team meeting in Eau Claire.
“I was surprised to receive this award — it was a special honor to be recognized,” says Dr. Dexter. “Organ donation is a personal and professional passion, and I am blessed to be part of an exceptional team that routinely goes above and beyond in providing care for patients and family members during their most difficult moments.” University of Wisconsin Organ and Tissue Donation decided earlier this year to create a new physician award to recognize high standards in donation support.
“While our team was creating the award criteria, Dr. Dexter’s name and work was mentioned as the gold standard,” says Holly Thomas, University of Wisconsin Organ and Tissue Donation. “After citing his work as examples, we decided that the award should be named in his honor. He demonstrates dedication to donation through his leadership, community outreach, mentoring, clinical expertise and participation in organ donation advocacy. Organ donation efforts are stronger and more effective due to his work.”
“Dr. Dexter is compassionate, knowledgeable and continually challenging donation acceptance criteria to be more inclusive,” says Kelly Buchholtz, Neuroscience/Pediatrics/Trauma, who is co-chair of the Organ Donation Team.
“Dr. Dexter is a key leader and resource in championing donation causes and overcoming challenges in the donation process,” says Buchholtz. “His work exemplifies what it means to be a physician champion.”
“When someone makes the generous offer of organ donation, as many as eight lives can be saved,” Dr. Dexter says. “I try to never lose sight of how this life-giving gift can be a great legacy and comfort for the donor and their family.”
The award will be announced and Dr. Dexter will be recognized at the Doug T. Miller Symposium on Organ Donation and Transplantation in May 2019.
