FAIRMONT, Minn. — Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont has launched a new program, “Mayo Clinic Mile at Five Lakes Centre,” which encourages area residents to walk at the mall and earn perks based on completed miles.
Mayo Clinic Health System and Fair Lakes Centre are issuing cards to track mall walking miles, and those who walk 25 miles in one month can earn a free T-shirt. The climate-controlled environment makes exercise easier during the winter months. Distance markers help walkers track their progress.
“A regular exercise program such as walking burns calories, boosts energy and mood, promotes sleep, and decreases a person’s risk of diabetes, stroke and heart attack,” says Timothy Sheneman, D.O., an Internal Medicine physician at Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont. “Walking can also be a social activity that allows family and friends to keep each other accountable while also having fun.”
Walking at Five Lakes Centre is free. Walkers have easy access to parking and restrooms.
Mall walking hours are from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays. The mall is located at 400 S. State St. in Fairmont.
Tracking cards are available at the wall-mounted card rack on the south end of the mall, as well as Minuteman Press in the mall. Cards also can be picked up at Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont Administration, 800 Medical Center Drive, Fairmont.
