RED WING, Minn. — Eric Wirta, PA-C, is the recent recipient of the 2019 Physician Assistant of the Year award presented by the Minnesota Academy of Physician Assistants (MAPA). The award recognizes a physician assistant who demonstrates exemplary service to the PA profession and to the communities they serve.
Wirta, a physician assistant at Mayo Clinic Health System in Ellsworth and Red Wing, was recently surprised by his colleagues with the honor. A formal award will be presented to Wirta at the annual PA conference in late February.
For more than 14 years, Wirta has worked in the area in departments including primary care, occupational medicine, urgent care and emergency medicine. Wirta’s colleague, Charles Moehnke, also a physician assistant, nominated Wirta for the award and recognized him for his outstanding clinic skills, his mentorship and his caring and compassionate bedside manner with his patients.
“Eric is an outstanding provider,” says Moehnke. “He is always motivated to learn more, and do more to enhance the PA profession. Eric is very deserving of this award.”
Wirta said he is grateful for providers, nurses, and other health care professionals who have worked with him along his professional journey.
“I have been blessed to work with a great group of people throughout my career. This award exemplifies the collaboration and exceptional mentoring that they all have extended to me here at Mayo Clinic Health System,” says Wirta. “There are so many talented individuals in the Physician Assistant field and to be chosen to receive this honor is humbling.”
Wirta lives in Red Wing with his wife, Holly, and their three children.
