    Career Observation/Explorer Experience

    Explorer Experience

Explorer experiences are allowed as an information gathering role; no direct patient contact or observation is allowed at any time.  A Mayo Clinic Health System staff member must accompany the individual at all times.  Explorer should wear student ID if available.

This type of experience can be offered to the student who does not meet our guidelines for Career Observation, typically high school age who is not in a specific careers program, or to the student whose college program requires interviewing a professional in their field.

Affiliation Agreements are not required for this type of student experience.

    Career Observation

This type of Job Shadow experience is available to high school students enrolled in a careers course and to post-secondary students enrolled in a career program or as a pre-requisite for a program. Job Shadows are observation roles only; no direct patient contact is allowed at any time. This individual will not have access to any computer applications or other confidential information. This experience does not require completion of a background screening. A Mayo Clinic Health System staff member must accompany the individual at all times. Student should wear school ID during the shadow experience. A standard job shadow allows up to 8 hours of observing. Job Shadow requests should be received at least four (4) weeks prior to the requested date for the approval and placement process to be completed. No Career Observation will be allowed in Surgery, OB/GYN services, Inpatient Units, Chemical Dependency and Psychology or Psychiatric Services. Affiliation Agreements are not required for this type of student experience.

Career Observation experiences are not currently available in the Department of Nursing. Students interested in learning more about the field of nursing can submit a request for a one hour interview with a nurse leader.
