Has your doctor told you it’s time for your screening?
You don't have to put it off, because Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse makes it so easy to get your colonoscopy. You can even go to the front of the line—appointments are available within a day or so.
What’s at stake
Colorectal cancer is the 3rd most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States. The American Cancer Society estimates 135,000 new colon cancer diagnoses were made last year. Colon cancer was responsible for more than 50,000 deaths.
The earlier, the better
Colorectal cancer often begins as small polyps that can become malignant over time. Colorectal cancer screenings can detect the polyps very early and prevent the disease from developing or spreading.
People over age 50 have a higher risk of developing polyps; even more so if colon cancer runs in the family, if they are overweight, smoke or have other conditions.
Your doctor knows all the math for early detection
For stage 1 colon cancer, the 5-year relative survival rate is about 92%. If you’ve had conversations about colonoscopy with your provider, now is the time to schedule yours. Call your provider to order the screening.
