Mayo Clinic Health System has decided to discontinue operations of Lutz Wing Nursing Home. We have secured the necessary approvals and support from the Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont community board of directors, Mayo Clinic Health System leadership, County Social Services, the Department of Human Services and the Minnesota Department of Health.
In addition, we have conducted meetings with a group of Fairmont community officials and state legislators to hear their input. We are fortunate to have their support and use their advice as we move forward with this change.
Why was the decision made to discontinue operations of Lutz Wing?
The strength of Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont is caring for patients in clinical, hospital and emergency settings. Long-term skilled nursing care is not considered a core Mayo Clinic competency. Seven skilled nursing facilities are within 30 minutes of Fairmont, with Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center right here in town. The strength of these facilities is providing skilled nursing care to short- and long-term residents. Most of the skilled nursing facilities within the area have capacity for additional residents.
Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont will continue to provide rehabilitation services and swing bed care to patients, as well as medical coverage at area nursing homes. Through collaboration and mutual understanding with our skilled nursing counterparts, we’re ensuring patients receive the best care in the appropriate setting.
How will Mayo Clinic Health System help current Lutz Wing residents during the transition?
Mayo Clinic Health System will partner with our current Lutz Wing residents, County Social Services and other organizations to ensure a smooth transition to a new facility. As a group, we will provide recommendations and guidance to residents and families so they feel prepared and comfortable with their move.
Locally, Lakeview is directly assisting with the transition, which will benefit residents and families. They are prepared to accept new patients and help facilitate relocations for residents who choose to move to Lakeview.
All residents and families received formal notification on Aug. 24 of the planned closure. We also are hosting a group meeting for residents and families on Aug. 29 to answer questions and provide support and direction.
When will Lutz Wing close?
We anticipate the closure will occur by Dec. 1.
What will the Lutz Wing space be used for?
Mayo Clinic Health System leaders are assessing the best use of the former Lutz Wing space. Oncology and infusion therapy services have been identified as services that could be relocated and potentially expanded into this space. More information will be shared once a final decision has been made.
