Mental health care and healing in Albert Lea
The new Psychiatric Services Unit opened in Albert Lea on October 30, 2018. The week before, Mayo Clinic Health System employees and the public were invited to get an insider look at the renovated space that will serve more patients that previously possible.
The move of inpatient mental health beds from Austin to Albert Lea marks an important milestone in the transition of services for Albert Lea and Austin. Mental Health consistently ranks as a top concern based on the Community Health Needs Assessment. The Open Houses showcased the $2.5-million investment in mental health care which is sorely lacking in Minnesota.
The new inpatient unit expands care to 16 private rooms and brings together on one campus residential mental health and addiction programs, allowing medical and chemical issues to be treated in one place. The facility includes access to a private courtyard and an exercise room, along with space for staff to perform their work.
Members of the Naeve Hospital Auxiliary were present at the Open Houses to welcome guests and show off the artwork that was made possible by their generous donation. Approximately 600 people came through the facility at one of two open houses.
For the public open house in the late afternoon, community partners also were present to distribute resources and information about mental health services.
