Dr. Yerby earned his bachelor’s degree in biology from Georgia State University in Atlanta. He earned his medical degree from Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia.
Dr. Yerby completed his residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, and a fellowship in surgical critical care at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina.
Dr. Yerby served in the United States Navy on two different occasions — first as a hospital corpsman from 1968 until 1972, then as a general surgeon from 1990 until 1994, earning the rank of lieutenant commander. He comes to Mayo Clinic Health System from Triangle Surgical Associates in Cary, North Carolina, where he worked as a general surgeon since 1994. For the past year, Dr. Yerby served as a temporary surgeon for Mayo Clinic Health System before accepting a full-time staff position.
He is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery and the National Board of Medical Examiners.
His special interests include laparoscopic hernia repair, bowel and breast surgery. Dr. Yerby also performs endoscopic procedures and colonoscopies.

In his spare time, he enjoys model trains.
