EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — Expectant mothers and their babies are among the many patients who depend on high-quality ultrasound examinations, also called sonography.
The obstetrical ultrasound practice at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire recently received reaccreditation by the Ultrasound Practice Council of the American Institute of Ultrasound Medicine. Under AIUM’s review, the entire obstetrical ultrasound practice was examined, including personnel, physical facilities, documentation, storage and record keeping, policies and procedures, and quality assurance methods
Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire’s obstetrical ultrasound program has been accredited since 1998. The latest accreditation is for three years. Participation in AIUM’s accreditation program is voluntary.
Ultrasound is an imaging method that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce precise images of structures within the body. A fetal ultrasound, or sonogram, uses sound waves to produce images of a baby in the uterus. A high-quality fetal ultrasound is vital to helping a mother’s health care provider evaluate fetal growth and development and determine how her pregnancy is progressing.
Carla Rogers, M.D., is physician champion of obstetrical ultrasound practice.
“Meeting the high standards set by AIUM verifies our staff’s efforts to provide exemplary care to our patients,” says Dr. Rogers, Obstetrics & Gynecology at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire.
The accreditation process allows ultrasound practices the opportunity to assess their strengths and weaknesses and initiate changes for improving their operation.
