EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — Wendy McDermott, M.D., a hospitalist, recently joined Hospital Medicine at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire. A hospitalist is a physician who is dedicated full time to taking care of patients admitted to the hospital.
Dr. McDermott earned her medical degree from the University of Minnesota-School of Medicine in Minneapolis. She received her bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering at North Dakota State University in Fargo, North Dakota.
Dr. McDermott completed her internal medicine residency at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Prior to joining Mayo Clinic Health System, Dr. McDermott served as a hospitalist at Bell Hospital and at Sound Inpatient Physicians in Ishpeming, Michigan.
Dr. McDermott is certified with the American Board of Internal Medicine and is a member of the American College of Physicians.
Hospitalists provide continuity of care for patients. Because they are located in the hospital, they are available to follow up on tests, procedures and treatments throughout a patient’s stay, and for discussion with patients and families. As a result, problems can be detected earlier, and complex medical issues can be better managed.
“It is an honor to be entrusted with the care of a person who is ill enough to need hospitalization. My goal is to help a patient and their loved ones understand what has caused the illness and what can be done to improve the situation, so fear can give way to peace and hope,” says Dr. McDermott.
In her spare time, Dr. McDermott enjoys gardening, listening to audiobooks, biking, cross-country skiing, running, making gourmet meals, and shared laughter with family and friends.
