RED WING, Minn. — With summer just around the corner, now is the time to go outside and embrace physical activity. Mayo Clinic Health System and the Red Wing Family YMCA are encouraging families to get active together by participating in Get Ready to Ramble. This free 9-week program prepares participants of all ages for the River City Ramble, a 5K walk/run, 2-mile walk and a kids’ fun run on Saturday, Aug. 5, 2017. The program is designed to help make physical activity a part of your everyday life.
During Get Ready to Ramble, Mayo Clinic Health System athletic trainer, Kathy Sheehan, and Red Wing YMCA personal trainer, Emilee Trost, will provide support and guidance. They have developed training programs that will meet you where you are physically – to get you started if you have never been physically active or improve your performance if you’re a regular exerciser or runner.
The kick-off for Get Ready to Ramble is Monday, June 5 at 5:15 p.m. in the Red Wing Central Park Band Shell. The weekly training sessions will run each Monday for the following nine weeks. A runner’s only group will meet at 11:30 a.m. and a group for both runners and walkers will meet at 5:15 p.m. Guest speakers will offer healthy tips for training at the start of every 5:15 p.m. session with group training for walkers and runners to follow. All Get Ready to Ramble participants are encouraged to participate in scheduled walk/runs and educational sessions.
“We encourage all members of our community to incorporate healthy behaviors into their lives,” says Brian Whited, M.D., president and CEO of Mayo Clinic Health System in Cannon Falls, Lake City and Red Wing. “By including physical activity into your daily routine, you can manage not only your own physical and mental health but it can also help you prepare for the River City Ramble on Aug. 5.”
The River City Ramble is an annual event sponsored by Mayo Clinic Health System and the Red Wing Family YMCA. Proceeds from the River City Ramble support youth scholarships for the Red Wing Family YMCA, allowing children the opportunity to participate in healthy activities throughout the year.
