CANNON FALLS, Minn —The capital campaign for the construction of a new medical center in Cannon Falls on 51 acres of land south of town is making good progress, reports Kathleen Brekken, chair of the campaign. “We are pleased to report that we have received over $4 million in gifts and pledges from the community to support the campaign, but there is much left to do,” says Brekken. “We need to identify the majority of gifts and pledges by the end of January.” Employees at Mayo Clinic Health System in Cannon Falls have contributed to the campaign and have already raised over $145,000.
The campaign is seeking pledges which may be paid over a period of up to five years. Time constraints make it impossible to personally reach out to every person and every household in the community. Interested members of the community can obtain a contribution form to make a gift or a pledge. Contribution forms are available at local banks, the Chamber of Commerce, the Shepherd’s Center, and in the waiting areas of the hospital and clinic.
“This project may be the single most important project to the future well-being of our community that any of us will see in our lifetime,” notes Brekken. The new medical center will ensure the continued availability of quality primary care and quick access to life-saving emergency care. The whole region will enjoy the many economic benefits that a new medical center will provide while creating jobs and making the greater Cannon Falls area more attractive to new residents and new businesses.
The total cost of the project is estimated at $30 million. Mayo Clinic is prepared to invest $20 million in the project if the community of Cannon Falls can generate the remaining $10 million. To date, the community has provided tax revenues, net assets available at affiliation in 2006, and philanthropic gifts totaling $7.5 million.
“Every gift counts as we move into the new year,” says Dean Lindeman, Development representative at the hospital. “We must generate another $500,000 in commitments by January 31st to keep the project on its current schedule.” After that goal is met, $2 million will remain in funds to be raised for the project to meet goal.
Lindeman says, “We are very fortunate that Mayo Clinic considers our project a high priority. When Mayo affiliated with our community hospital in 2006, they did so with a sense of partnership, that both parties would do their part to make the relationship a success and to ultimately build a much needed new medical center.”
Mayo is a not-for-profit organization that relies on philanthropy to pursue its three-fold mission of medical research, education and practice, as represented by the three shields of the Mayo logo. All contributions are tax deductible to the full extent of the law.
