Permanent Birth Control

If you are done having children, we offer a permanent birth control procedure that is performed in a clinic setting without incisions, eliminating the risks of surgery and general anesthesia.

The clinic procedure takes about 15 minutes, and the patient is in the clinic for about an hour and a half. During the procedure, a soft, flexible coil is placed into the fallopian tubes. After the coils are in place, tissue grows around them creating a barrier. Women need to use another form of birth control during this period. The barrier is confirmed with an X-ray test after about three months, and then other birth control methods can be eliminated. Recovery time is minimal.

The clinic procedure is 99.8 percent effective and is offered at Mayo Clinic Health System locations in Eau Claire, Menomonie and Rice Lake.
