Auxiliary

History
1915:    Purchased and converted the Greer house for $4500.  With the opening of the “Lake City Hospital”, the hospital auxiliary was formed and called the “Women’s Auxiliary”.  They secured funds for furniture and dishes to be used in the hospital.  During WW1, the Auxiliary was busy working with Red Cross making bandages and other things for the soldiers in the basement of the hospital.
1931:  The churches each started sending two ladies to be members of the Auxiliary.

1939:  The new “Lake City Municipal Hospital” opened at a cost of $87,000.  It replaced the 1915 converted house which had become unsafe and deemed a fire trap.  New structure was fireproof and ultra-modern in every respect and with a capacity for 30 patients.

1964:  Robert Polk, the new hospital administrator, introduced a new volunteer service, “Pink Ladies”.  Today with the short length of hospital stays, we no longer have “Pink Ladies”.

1968:  The Auxiliary sewing group made the drapes for hospital rooms and solarium after the new addition to the hospital was added.

1972:  The Telecare program was started—this program is a free service for persons living alone and provides a secure feeling for clients by having and outside contact for them each day.  This program is still in service today.

1987:  The Auxiliary with the help of the community and a grant raised $20,000 to purchase the Lifeline System for the hospital and units for the subscribers.  The Auxiliary installed, checked & cleaned the units for 5 years and then turned over the responsibility to the Lake City Hospital/Nursing Home.

Auxiliary today:  There are about 65 members that service the clinic, hospital and care center.  Services include; Telecare, care center resident cards, sponsor of the Bloodmobile and Daffodil Days, sewing quilts, new baby bags, baby caps, burp bibs and nursing tents.  Several fundraisers are held throughout the year to help with needs of the Lake City facility and a scholarship program.
