Ultrasounds are performed by your provider or our group of diagnostic medical sonographers, all registered through the ARDMS (American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers).
First Trimester Ultrasound
In the first trimester, ultrasound can be used to help determine location of the pregnancy, the gestational age, number of babies or viability of pregnancy. Endovaginal ultrasound is frequently used in the first trimester.
Second Trimester Ultrasound
It is common to have a “General Fetal Survey” or “Anatomy” ultrasound between 18 and 22 wks. The exam typically lasts about 45 minutes. The technologist performing the exam will save multiple images to be reviewed by a radiologist to help evaluate your baby’s growth and development. At this point in pregnancy it is possible to determine your baby’s gender.
Third Trimester Ultrasound
Ultrasounds performed in the 3rd trimester are useful in determining the baby’s estimated weight, amount of amniotic fluid, location of the placenta, fetal heart rate and position of baby.
3D/4D OB Ultrasound
3D and 4D ultrasound is available in our La Crosse OB clinic and also in many regional sites including Onalaska, Holmen, Sparta, Tomah and Arcadia. While 3D/4D technology can sometimes help determine the severity of a suspected birth defect, the majority of the diagnostic ultrasound will be done in 2D (traditional ultrasound). If the baby is in a good position we will attempt to get 3D/4D images for you to take home as a keepsake at no additional charge.
