Welcome to the Family Birthplace at Mayo Clinic Health System Franciscan Healthcare in La Crosse.
Congratulations on this very special time in your life! We're here to help you prepare the warmest of welcomes for your new arrival.
Our goal is to provide you with numerous resources to help you feel confident and secure throughout your pregnancy and after. From pregnancy information and childbirth classes before your baby is born, to birthing tips and parenting classes as your new baby grows and develops - we're here to support you throughout one of life's amazing experiences.
The information we provide here is primarily for the mother, but fathers, birth partners and family members are encouraged to read it as well.
Maternity Counselors guide and provide education to pregnant women as well as complement and expand upon the information shared with you by your healthcare provider. They are registered nurses who are specially trained in pregnancy and childbirth. You will meet with them two or three times during your pregnancy - during your first visit to the department, at approximately 28 weeks, and an optional appointment at about 36 to 37 weeks. Maternity Counselors:
- Answer questions
- Talk about options available at Franciscan Healthcare
- Help you choose the prenatal education classes that are right for you
- Discuss choices
- Help you make your personal "Birth Plan"
- Provide educational support
Maternity Counselors are available Monday 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Tuesday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. These appointments last approximately one hour and can be scheduled along with your healthcare provider appointment. Contact a Maternity Counselor at 608-392-6235.
Your Birth Plan
At your first visit you will receive a sample Birth Plan. You'll have plenty of chances to talk about the choices available at Mayo Clinic Health System with your Maternity Counselor or your healthcare provider. Always keeping you and your baby's safety in mind, they will help you design a plan that will make your birthing experience what you imagine it to be. Examples of information included in the birth plan:
- Pain management (both non-medication comfort measures and medication methods)
- Partner involvement
- Bonding time and priorities
- Any other ideas for your birthing experience
