Faculty

Thomas Grau MD

Thomas J. Grau, M.D. – Program Director
(program director since 1988)
Dr. Grau is a graduate of the University of South Dakota School of Medicine and completed his residency at the Family Medicine Residency in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Family Medicine and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. He and his wife have three children. He enjoys music, water and snow skiing, golf, and mostly spending time with his family.

John Merfeld MD 

John M. Merfeld, M.D. – Associate Director
(faculty member since 2004)
Dr. Merfeld received his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin. He is a 1998 graduate of the La Crosse-Mayo Family Medicine Residency. Prior to joining the residency faculty, Dr. Merfeld was in private rural practice in Reedsburg, Wisconsin. He and his wife have three children. Dr. Merfeld enjoys spending time with family and friends, theatre, attending athletic events, basketball and coaching youth activities. Dr. Merfeld will become the program director in January 2017.

Craig Bartos MD

Craig L. Bartos, M.D. Associate Director

Dr. Bartos received his medical degree from Rush Medical College and completed his Family Medicine residency at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Family Medicine and a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Bartos and his wife have three children. He enjoys photography, music and a variety of outdoor recreational activities.

Karen Cowan MD

Karen K. Cowan, M.D. – Associate Director
(faculty member since 2007)
Dr. Cowan received her medical degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1981. She completed her residency in Family Medicine at the University of Wisconsin, Fox Valley Family Medicine Residency in Appleton. Dr. Cowan recently worked in Decorah, IA, and also worked at Luther College Health Service. Her special interests include adolescent medicine, medical education and the patient-centered medical home. She and her husband have four children.

Edward Malone MD

Edward Malone, M.D. – Associate Director

Dr. Malone earned his medical degree from Rush Medical College in Chicago, IL and is a graduate of the La Crosse – Mayo Family Medicine Residency himself. Prior to joining the residency faculty in 2012, Dr. Malone served as the program director for the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse/Gundersen Lutheran/Mayo Clinic Physician Assistant Program. He is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and Wisconsin Academy of Family Physicians. His special interests include Sports Medicine, Obstetrics, Hospital Medicine and Pediatrics.

Erin Morcomb MD

Erin F. Morcomb, M.D. – Assistant Director

Dr. Morcomb earned her medical degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School in the Twin Cities but is really a small-town girl at heart, growing up not far from La Crosse in Rushford, Minnesota. She is a 2016 graduate of the La Crosse-Mayo Family Medicine Residency. Her interests in medicine include just about everything since she did choose to practice Family Medicine after all, but she is especially fond of geriatrics, obstetrics and hospital medicine. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her husband (who is also named Aaron), spending time with family and friends, reading and participating in instrumental music performance activities.

 

Cheri Olson MD

Cheri L. Olson, M.D. – Associate Director

Dr. Olson is a graduate of the University of Minnesota Medical School. She completed her residency in Family Medicine at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine. Dr. Olson has special interests in global health and has traveled to Russia, Georgia and Vietnam for medical service. She also directs the Continuing Professional Development (formerly CME) Department for Mayo Clinic Health System. She and her husband, an allergist, have three children. Her interests include canoeing, camping, spending time with family, music and is a runner wannabe.

Mark Brumm MD

Mark R. Brumm, M.D.

Dr. Brumm is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin and completed his residency at the University of Michigan. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Family Medicine and a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. He practices at the Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse. He and his wife, Jennifer Brumm, M.D., have two children.

 

Carmen Dargel MD

Carmen M. Dargel, M.D.

Dr. Dargel, a Wisconsin native, received her medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin. She is a 2007 graduate of the La Crosse-Mayo Family Medicine Residency and practices at Mayo Clinic Health System in Onalaska. She enjoys spending time with her dog, walking, reading, and traveling.

 

Michael Saunders MD

Michael J. Saunders, MD
Dr. Saunders received his medical degree from the University of Minnesota and completed his residency in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He and his wife have one daughter and he practices at Mayo Clinic Health System in Tomah, Wisconsin.
