Spine Lower Back

Most people with only back pain are not good candidates for surgery and will find relief with conservative treatments. However, surgery may be necessary for some patients. All back surgeries are done at our hospital in Eau Claire.

Our team is able to care for everything from simple, short-term back pain to complex cases to revision surgeries. In many cases, we are able to perform a minimally invasive surgical procedure that uses a  small incision. This can reduce your time under anesthesia and the length of your hospital stay. It also reduces your of risk of infection and increases your recovery speed.

Before surgery
You will meet with your surgeon and nurse practitioner team in the clinic, and together, we will decide if surgery is right for you. We review your goals, images and discuss the options together. We may use the spinal model to show you what is going on with your back. Please ask questions, as we want to make sure you understand all the benefits and risks of your surgery.

During Surgery
Depending on what type of surgery you have, you may go home the same day or need to stay at the hospital for a day or two. If you stay in the hospital, your surgeon will see you once or twice a day to see how you are feeling and make sure your pain is under control.

After surgery
It is important that you follow your post-surgical instructions carefully so you don’t reinjure your back. Physical rehabilitation will typically start about six weeks after your surgery. You will have lifting restrictions for the first few weeks, as well. You will meet with your surgeon and nurse practitioner in the clinic a few months after your surgery.
