Parent's Corner

Being a parent is a great job but can be stressful when your child is sick or injured. Here are some common health-related topics for parents.

Influenza is a viral infection that attacks your respiratory system — your nose, throat and lungs. Influenza, commonly called the flu, is not the same as the stomach "flu" viruses that cause diarrhea and vomiting.

Fever medications
When your child has a fever, it’s important that you give him or her the correct dose of either acetaminophen or ibuprofen. The dosing for these two common medications is very different:

  • Be sure to read the label to make sure you are using the right product.
  • Don’t use a kitchen teaspoon to measure the medication. Use the dispenser included in the package or given to you by your pharmacist.
  • Refer to the fever medication dosing chart on the packaging.

Common rashes
Skin rashes can occur from a variety of factors, including infections, heat, allergens, immune system disorders and medications. They may cause discomfort or pain, as well as embarrassment about the appearance of your skin. Some skin rashes clear up without treatment but others may require creams or ointments.
