Springfield welcomes audiologist to expanding list of providers

January 29, 2016

SPRINGFIELD, Minn. — Colleen Ireland, Au.D., recently began providing audiology outreach services at Mayo Clinic Health System in Springfield. Having started this past fall at Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato, she is now seeing patients every other Wednesday in Springfield. As an audiologist, Dr. Ireland’s primary professional focus is providing hearing evaluations, as well as hearing aid, cochlear implant and Baha services to patients of all ages.

“I am thrilled to be a part of Mayo Clinic Health System, especially having the opportunity to provide hearing services to patients in southwest Minnesota,” says Dr. Ireland. “I grew up on my family’s farm just east of Mankato, and from an early age, I understood the amazing level of care Mayo Clinic provides to people in need.”

Thinking back, Dr. Ireland credits a former classmate as one of the influencing factors that led her to a career in audiology.

“One of my friends in elementary school was hearing impaired,” says Dr. Ireland. “As a result, I learned to communicate using sign language and continued to study even more on the subject through high school. Later, while attending undergraduate school, an instructor helped turn my attention to audiology.”

Dr. Ireland received her Doctorate of Audiology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Disorders from Minnesota State University, Mankato.

“Hearing impairment is often connected to our quality of life,” states Dr. Ireland. “As an audiologist, I strive to offer my patients the best care. Having the collaborative team and collective resource backing of Mayo Clinic Health System is critical to that effort.”

Mayo Clinic Health System in Springfield’s Audiology Department offers a unique single-wall hearing exam booth with a 36-inch door and ramp to accommodate all patients, including those in wheelchairs. Testing completed is more reliable due to the dependable acoustic performance of its sound-proof space.

“We feel the addition of Audiology to our existing medical service lines allows patients the comprehensive health care options they are looking for from our medical center,” says Jennifer White, M.D., Mayo Clinic Health System in Springfield family medicine. “Having Dr. Ireland provide specialty outreach to our clinic gives patients even greater access to the expertise and knowledge of Mayo Clinic hearing services they need, right here in Springfield.”

In her spare time, Dr. Ireland is an avid reader and enjoys spending time with her dogs and getting together with nearby family members.
