Summer food program expands in Red Wing

June 01, 2016

RED WING, Minn. — For the past two years, Mayo Clinic Health System in Red Wing has provided vending services to the Summer Food Service Program. Serving over 2,000 free lunches to children in the Red Wing area in 2015 alone, came the realization just how many children are not being properly fed during the summer months.

This year, along with preparing the meals, Mayo Clinic Health System in Red Wing has committed to sponsoring the event, with help from Every Hand Joined and United Way. Beginning on June 6, lunch will be provided to children 18 years and younger, without regard to race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability, at no charge and meet nutritional standards established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) at various sites around the Red Wing community.

A committee made up of representatives from the partnering organizations has been hard at work planning this year’s program. In an effort to feed more children, the committee has expanded the drop-off sites to include more locations around Red Wing known for having higher volumes of children, including Red Wing High School, Jefferson Park, Grandview Trailer Park, Pepin Woods Trailer Park and the Anderson Center, in addition to delivering meals to Colvill Park and the Red Wing Family YMCA.

Meals will be offered to children at the following sites:

  • Colvill Family Center, 269 East 5th Street, June 6 - August 12 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
  • Spring Creek Park, 950 Spring Creek Road, June 6 - August 26 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
  • Pepin Woods Trailer Park, 2118 Pioneer Road, June 6 - August 26 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
  • The Anderson Center, 163 Tower View Drive, July 25 - August 5 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
  • Red Wing High School, 2451 Eagle Ridge Drive, June 7 – July 1 10-10:30 a.m. and 11:15-11:45 a.m.
  • YMCA, 434 Main Street June 6 - August 26, 11:15 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.
  • Jefferson Park, 601 Buchanan Street June 13 - July 29,  11:45 a.m. -12:15 p.m.
  • Colvill Park, Nymphara Lane June 13 - July 29, 11:45 a.m. -12:15 p.m.

“It’s so important to look at health care beyond our four walls, and by sponsoring the program and preparing the meals we are ensuring our local children are getting at least one healthy meal a day,” says Liz Knapp, a registered dietician in Cannon Falls, Lake City and Red Wing.

The lunch distribution program is run by volunteers. Volunteers are scheduled on a daily or weekly basis to pick up the lunches from the medical center, distribute the lunches to the various sites and return the containers from the previous day back to the medical center.
