RED WING, Minn. — Luke Wood, D.O. recently joined the team of Emergency Medicine providers at Mayo Clinic Health System in Red Wing. He will see patients in both Urgent Care and the Emergency Department.
“I really enjoy the pace and variety along with the ability to really engage with patients one-to-one and work closely with the rest of the care team,” says Dr. Wood. He says he was inspired to pursue Emergency Medicine while he worked as an emergency room technician before entering medical school. His interest in medicine in general started with exposure at a young age. He says many of his immediate relatives are also doctors.
Dr. Wood earned his doctor of osteopathy degree at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in Biddeford, Maine. He completed residency at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine. Most recently, he practiced Emergency Medicine at a hospital in Norway, Maine.
While Dr. Wood received his education and training in Maine, he’s native to the area. He and his wife grew up in Rochester. “We both felt we really wanted to be close to our families,” he says. “I chose Red Wing because I really like the practice and it allows me to continue to focus on community emergency medicine. I’m also familiar with Red Wing having driven through the community many times, and my grandparents were married in Red Wing while my grandfather completed residency at Mayo Clinic. It’s a beautiful area.”
Dr. Wood says he has special interest in sports medicine and extremity trauma, transfer medicine which looks at the way patients are transported among locations in an emergency situation, and resident education.
Dr. Wood and his wife, Krista, have a son, Kjelten (2) and a springer spaniel, Moose. His hobbies include mountain biking, Nordic skiing, camping, hiking and occasional running.
