New Prague expands cancer care with addition of oncologist

November 23, 2015

NEW PRAGUE, Minn. — Access to cancer care in New Prague recently expanded as Mayo Clinic Health System welcomed once-per-week services from Arunabh Sekhri, MBBS, a Mayo Clinic Health System oncologist and hematologist. Dr. Sekhri cares for patients in New Prague each Wednesday and practices in Mankato the rest of the week. Mayo Clinic Health System in New Prague now offers medical oncology Wednesdays and Fridays and infusion therapy Monday-Friday.

“Increasing cancer services in New Prague means less travel for patients and care closer to home,” says Dr. Sekhri. “We’re also part of Mayo Clinic, so we have a unique connection to some of the top cancer experts in the world.”

Dr. Sekhri joined Mayo Clinic Health System in July and started in New Prague in October. Previously, he was an assistant professor of hospital medicine at New York Medical College at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, New York. He completed his internal medicine residency, as well as his hematology and oncology fellowship through New York Medical College. Additionally, Dr. Sekhri completed a hospice and palliative medicine fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. He is certified in internal medicine, hospice and palliative care from the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Regarding his decision to come to Mayo Clinic, Dr. Sekhri explains, “I really like Mayo as an organization. There’s good support, more time allotted for patient interaction and a direct link to Mayo Clinic in Rochester.”

Dr. Sekhri says making a difference in peoples’ lives and developing relationships with patients and their families is what he enjoys most about medicine. Not to mention, oncology is fast-moving, challenging and always allows him to learn more, he adds.
