Franciscan Healthcare Cancer Center Receives Achievement Award

April 04, 2012

The Cancer Center at Mayo Clinic Health System Franciscan Healthcare in La Crosse has been named one of 106 recipients nationwide of the Outstanding Achievement Award as presented by the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer (CoC). The award is based on a review of care provided by the Cancer Center between 2009 and 2011.

Additionally, the La Crosse Cancer Center is one of only 13 of the current 106 award recipients to have earned the Outstanding Achievement Award during each of the three award review periods (2005, 2008 and 2011). The achievement award places the La Crosse program on par with recognized cancer centers in such communities as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Miami and Baltimore.

“We are very proud of our accomplishments within the cancer program over this multi-year time frame,” says Kathleen Christian, M.D., breast surgeon and chair of the Mayo Clinic Health System Franciscan Healthcare Cancer Committee. “We offer the highest quality, comprehensive care using a team approach, access to clinical trials, extensive support services and are continually striving to improve our program.”

Established in 2004, the Commission on Cancer Outstanding Achievement Award is designed to recognize cancer programs that strive for excellence in providing quality care to cancer patients. The award is granted to facilities that demonstrate a Commendation level of compliance with seven standards that represent six areas of cancer program activity: cancer committee leadership, cancer data management, clinical management, research, community outreach, and quality improvement. The level of compliance with the seven standards is determined during an on-site evaluation by a physician surveyor.

There are currently more than 1,500 CoC-accredited cancer programs in the US, representing 30 percent of all hospitals. CoC-accredited facilities diagnose and/or treat more than 70 percent of all newly diagnosed cancer patients each year. A majority of award recipients are community-based facilities; however, teaching hospitals, National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers, Veterans Administration hospitals, and Network Cancer Programs also received the award.
