Nurse practitioner newest member of primary care team

October 05, 2015

FAIRMONT, Minn. — Hailing from a small Minnesota town and advocating for rural medicine, Jessica Julig-Weedman, D.N.P., joins the primary care team at Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont with energy and excitement. She began as a nurse practitioner at the medical center on Sept. 23.

“I’m from a rural area, and I think rural medicine has a lot to offer,” says Julig-Weedman, an Osakis, Minnesota native. “Being able to develop relationships with patients and get involved in the community is important to me and the people I care for.”

Health care has long been close to Julig-Weedman’s heart. At 15 years old, she was diagnosed with cancer and went through chemotherapy. During that time, Julig-Weedman says she had providers and nurses who were integral to her survival and quality of life. That experience led to her interest in nursing and helping others. And since she was cared for at Mayo Clinic, the organization has been special to her as well.

“Mayo Clinic has some of the best providers in the world,” adds Julig-Weedman. “It’s great to work for an institution that offers state-of-the-art care and is on the forefront of evidence-based medicine.”

After graduating with her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Minnesota State University, Moorhead, Julig-Weedman worked as a registered nurse in Alexandria, Minnesota from 2006 to 2012. She then took a registered nurse position at Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato, where she worked until graduating from the University of Minnesota as a Doctor of Nursing Practice (D.N.P.) in May 2015.

Julig-Weedman is certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. In addition, she holds pediatric advanced life support and advanced cardiac life support certifications. Her medical interests include pediatrics, women’s health and caring for entire families. Her personal hobbies are gardening, cooking and spending time at the family cabin.

“Having kind, compassionate primary care providers is essential for delivering the right care to our patients,” says Marie Morris, M.D., Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont medical director. “Jessica brings those attributes to every single patient interaction she has. We’re happy to have her at the medical center and in the community.”
