FAIRMONT, Minn. — Heidi Stevermer, nurse practitioner, joined the family medicine teams at Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont and Truman Oct. 7. She’ll care for patients in Fairmont on Mondays and Wednesdays and in Truman on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Stevermer spent 11 years as a registered nurse at Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato and more than a year as a nurse practitioner at Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea in Urgent Care and Express Care.
“I was looking for a primary care opportunity close to home,” says Stevermer of her transfer to Fairmont. “I worked at rural medical sites during graduate school, and I enjoy providing primary care and health promotion to rural populations.”
She also has a penchant for global health. While attending nursing school at Winona State University in Winona, Minnesota, Stevermer participated in mission work to Jamaica, which sparked her interest in health care across the world. She then traveled to Tanzania in 2007, Papua New Guinea in 2010 and helped start a nonprofit global medical mission group in Mankato, Minnesota. Not only did these experiences expand her health care knowledge, she gained further appreciation of the care we’re afforded in the United States.
“I appreciate the health care we have here. Going on those trips reminds you how blessed we are in the U.S. And people in these other countries really end up teaching you many things,” says Stevermer.
In addition to her bachelor’s degree in nursing, Stevermer holds a Master of Science in Nursing from Winona State University-Rochester in Rochester, Minnesota. She’s certified by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners.
“Heidi is an excellent addition to our family medicine groups in Fairmont and Truman. She brings broad experience and expertise,” says Marie Morris, M.D., Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont medical director.
Stevermer lives in Easton, Minnesota and spends her free time traveling, serving on the board of directors at the Mankato Ballet Company and participating in various outdoor activities.
