Three Mayo Clinic campuses recognized for environmental efforts

May 27, 2016

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — Mayo Clinic campuses in Florida, Minnesota and Wisconsin have, again, been recognized for their sustainability efforts by Practice Greenhealth, a national organization dedicated to reducing the impact health care institutions have on the environment.

Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire and Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, each received the 2016 Greenhealth Emerald Award for demonstrating superior sustainability programs. Eau Claire also was recognized for its efforts to reduce the environmental impact of surgical procedures in operating rooms with a Greening the OR Initiative Award and earned recognition through the Circle of Excellence Award for water and energy reduction. Out of the approximately 700 applications, only 10 received the Circle of Excellence Award.

Mayo Clinic’s campus in Jacksonville, Florida, earned the Partner for Change Award for improving and expanding efforts to eliminate mercury, reduce waste, recycle and lessen the impact on the environment.

“These awards highlight hospitals that are pushing the envelope and driving innovation in sustainability performance,” says Cecilia DeLoach Lynn, Practice Greenhealth.

“It’s estimated these efforts at Mayo Clinic’s campuses, collectively, have saved more than $6 million annually through more efficient operations,” says Henry Tazellar, M.D., Mayo Clinic Green Advisory Council chair.

“In 2015, 325,000 gallons of water were saved by reducing irrigated landscaping and smart irrigation of turfed areas; 289,650 kilowatt hours were saved through energy-related projects; and the Surgery Department implemented a blue wrap and plastic recycling program,” says Gordon Howie, Facilities and Construction Services director for Mayo Clinic Health System in northwest Wisconsin.

“We know that environmental health affects human health. By incorporating our values into our sustainability efforts, we can improve the health of our community,” says Howie.

Practice Greenhealth is the nation’s leading health care community that empowers its members to increase their efficiencies and environmental stewardship while improving patient safety and care through tools, best practices and knowledge.
