Construction of new replacement hospital underway for Mayo Clinic Health System

August 07, 2013

CANNON FALLS, Minn — It was a snowy start when breaking ground in April, yet construction for a new facility for Mayo Clinic Health System in Cannon Falls has progressed very well.

Construction of the new facility in Cannon Falls began four months ago. Boldt Construction is managing the project and reports to be on track to have the facility ready for a grand opening in fall 2014.

“We are very pleased with the progress made to date,” says Tom Witt, M.D. president and CEO of Mayo Clinic Health System in Cannon Falls, Lake City and Red Wing. “We look forward to what the new facility has to offer our patients.”

Concrete footings and foundations have been poured and structural steel columns are in the process of being erected. Other recent highlights include:

  • A 100-Ton crawler crane was erected at the site and can be seen from Highway 52.
  • Deep excavation was completed at the storm water overflow pond (located to the north of the facility) which will collect runoff water once the facility is constructed.
  • The main driveway entrance and future parking lot rough grading was completed, creating better access to the construction site for deliveries and work crews.
  • Topsoil, sand and gravel mined from the construction area are being stored on-site and will be repurposed for future use.

In the new medical center, patients and visitors can expect an improved overall experience beyond the continued presence of dependable, high-quality health care. The new facility will have up to 90,000 square feet or nearly three times more space than the current building, allowing Mayo Clinic Health System to expand its emergency medicine care and many other services, improve privacy, and add new technology.
