Army Reservists and Cannon Falls EMTs train at Mayo Clinic Health System

November 09, 2015

CANNON FALLS, Minn. — Whether it’s on the battlefield or in the operating room, Mayo Clinic’s support of the U.S. military and its members runs deep and wide. In a collaborative approach, Mayo Clinic Health System in Cannon Falls hosted the first-ever training exercise for an Army Reserve surgical team from Ft. Snelling in St. Paul, Minn. The half-day training was held Saturday, Nov. 7, 2015. Twelve soldiers from the 945th Forward Surgical Team along with Cannon Falls EMTs participated in a drill focusing on stabilization of the critically injured patient using mannequin based simulation.

“We are excited about this wonderful and generous liaison with Mayo Clinic Health System in Cannon Falls and the opportunity to train with our civilian EMT counterparts and military Reserve members who live in Rochester and the surrounding area as well as reservists from the Twin Cities,” says Walt Franz, M.D., a Mayo Clinic family medicine physician and Colonel (Ret), Medical Corps, USAR.

According to Dr. Franz, this proposed training is also directly applicable to the efforts the Military Medical Education Committee is fostering with the Defense Health Agency in areas of research, practice and education that benefit the military and the country.

“Our new facility is designed to accommodate training such as this and we are delighted to host soldiers and EMTs from Cannon Falls for this purpose,” says Glenn Christian, operations manager at Mayo Clinic Health System in Cannon Falls.

Additional training exercises in Cannon Falls are being considered in the coming months.
