Barron construction 2016

BARRON, Wis. –– Construction will begin this winter for new inpatient hospital rooms in the Medical/Surgical Department at Mayo Clinic Health System – Northland in Barron.

The $4.9 million, 8,778-square-foot project will include 10 new rooms and feature expanded, state-of-the-art and environmentally friendly features for patients. Also during this time, a 5,600-square-foot shell space will be constructed for future replacement of the hospital’s Family Birth Center unit.

“The new care environment will give patients, family members and staff amble space in a calm environment,” says Rita Sullivan, vice president, Mayo Clinic Health System – Northland in Barron. “The current rooms in this part of the hospital were constructed in 1982 and do not meet the current needs of our patients because they are very small and cannot accommodate medical equipment. The new rooms will be a benefit for our patients, their families and our employees.”

When construction is complete, each new patient room will include a private bathroom with safety rails, wheelchair accessibility and lift systems. The rooms are designed for patient comfort and will feature remotely controlled lights and temperature from a patient’s bed. In addition, the new rooms will be large enough to accommodate some therapies and procedures without having to move the patient to a different location.

"The new unit will include a small private area for discussions between family members and the care team,” says Robert Peterson, M.D., Hospital Medicine. “Currently, those conversations are held in the hall or the patient room, which is not ideal. The new arrangement will offer more space, privacy and comfort to the patients and their family members.”

During construction, patients in the Medical/Surgical Department will be cared for in the former nursing home rooms in the hospital.

Construction is expected to take about one year.

Each year, Mayo Clinic Health System – Northland in Barron cares for more than 500 hospitalized patients.

Mayo Clinic Health System – Northland includes the hospital and clinic in Barron, and clinics in Cameron, Chetek and Rice Lake.
