Barron, Rice Lake physician assistant named SEMPA diplomat

BARRON, Wis. — John Graykoski, Family Medicine physician assistant at  Mayo Clinic Health System – Northland in Barron and Rice Lake, recently was named a diplomat of the Society of Emergency Medicine Physician Assistants (SEMPA).

He is a past president of SEMPA, a recognized specialty organization of the American Association of Physician Assistants (AAPA), whose mission is to promote and support the professional, clinical and personal development of physician assistants involved with emergency medicine and to advance the practice of emergency medicine. Members serve on a variety of committees within the American College of Emergency Physicians.

“A diplomat of SEMPA is an honor bestowed by the board of director to select members of the emergency medicine community to impart the highest honor of respect from the Society,” says Lynn Scherer, SEMPA president. “SEMPA owes John Graykoski a debt of gratitude for his leadership, example and invaluable contributions to the profession of emergency medicine.”

Graykoski has more than 30 years of executive management experience, including strategic planning, human resource development, finance and leadership training. He completed his physician assistant training at the University of California-Davis School of Medicine and received a master’s degree in physician assistant studies from the University of Nebraska School of Medicine. His certifications include fundamental critical care support, as well as advanced cardiac, advanced trauma and pediatric advanced life support. He also is board-certified in emergency medicine.

Since joining Mayo Clinic Health System in 2006, Graykoski has successfully led a project to integrate physician assistants and nurse practitioners working at the four area hospital Emergency Departments into one team of staff, utilizing consistent protocols of care standards, equipment and training at each location.

In 2013, he was named distinguished fellow of AAPA and senior fellow of SEMPA.

Prior to transferring to Family Medicine in August 2015, Graykoski was the director of Emergency Medicine physician assistants and nurse practitioners in northwest Wisconsin.
