New books for new babies

March 07, 2012

The Ellis Middle School Equity Team and Culture Club held a new book drive for new babies, which yielded over 1,200 in total that were collected and donated to the Women’s Special Care Unit (WSCU) at Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin on March 1.

The book drive project was one way for the students to remind families about the importance of reading to their children and to remind people of Read Across America Day, which took place on March 2.

Nancy Hoversten, WSCU nurse manager, said every newborn at Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin will be given a new book for a long time to come. “We are very grateful to the students and staff at Ellis Middle School for taking on this wonderful project and for thinking of us and all newborns and their families,” says Hoversten.
